DEDICATION - "I would like to dedicate this play to my mother, Elisabeth,
for she has taught me that the human spirit can overcome anything
and that life is an adventure for each and everyone of us to
live. Thanks Mum"
- Jeffery Richards, March 1997
SYNOPSIS -
The play is set on a train.
The train is divided in the center by a transparent, flexible
scrim. One side appears to be based in reality - Big Jessie watches
his life through the dividing piece of material and sees past,
present and future. The other side of the train seems to be a
dream state, the memories of what was and things to come. Big
Jessie struggles as he watches himself grow through his life's
journey; the taking of his Mother, his Father's inner struggle
and eventual suicide. The events gather momentum, drugs start
to take over Jessie's existance, until finally, he is faced with
the same dilemma as his Father. That is where the twist occurs.
We find out that neither side is real and Jessie has been dreaming
himself older, dreaming his memories of his life and seeing into
the future. He now has the chance for redemption - yet, in the
end, as for all of us, the choice will be his.
"The intertwining of the
two Jessie's and the choice of alternative fates provides the
climax. The acceptance of love and being able to love as being
the way to break the cycle, provides the resolution. The primary
dynamic comes from Jessie's battle with drugs and the helpless
subconscious attraction of his father's fate. This is very strong
motivation in the storyline and the particular structure allows
it to resonate across the several layers - providing harmonics
of meaning and connection." - Playbox Theatre Company
