The play is set on a train.
The train is divided in the center by a transparent, flexible
scrim between the automatic doors. One half of the train appears to be based in reality. The other side seems to be based in a dream state and is constantly changing, and is where the past, present and future is played out.
Big Jessie watches
his life through this dividing piece of material on the reality side, viewing the past,
present and possible future. He tries to push through the material to try and change events, but never succeeds.
As he watches himself grow through his life's
journey; the taking of his Mother, his Father's inner struggle
and eventual suicide, events gather momentum until drugs take over Jessie's existence. Finally, he is faced with
the same dilemma as his Father.... Suicide.
At this point a twist occurs.
We find out that neither side is real, and Jessie has been dreaming
himself older, dreaming his memories of his life and seeing into
the future. He now has the chance for redemption - yet, in the
end, as for all of us, the choice will be his.
Playbox Theatre Company wrote::
"The intertwining of the
two Jessie's and the choice of alternative fates provides the
climax. The acceptance of love and being able to love as being
the way to break the cycle, provides the resolution. The primary
dynamic comes from Jessie's battle with drugs and the helpless
subconscious attraction of his father's fate. This is very strong
motivation in the storyline and the particular structure allows
it to resonate across the several layers - providing harmonics
of meaning and connection."
"... Your characters are
accessible and well defined and you have a good understanding of structure
and sense of theatre ... a playwright (of) exciting qualities." - Malcom Robertson - Playbox Theatre Company
Thank you to Playbox for taking
the time to write to Jeffery and for their very encouraging words.
